Chapter 10

Tchaikovsky's “Romeo and Juliet” Overture Fantasy - transcribed and performed by Vyacheslav Gryaznov, pianist

Completed in 2014, this wonderful transcription is in the style of late Romanticism as one might find in the operatic transcriptions of Franz Liszt.

Maintaining the integrity of the original, Gryaznov carefully follows the intent of Tchaikovsky’s orchestral score and transforms it into a pianistically sound and highly effective fantasy leaving the listener to wonder which came first; a sort of “chicken or the egg” moment.

I am personally grateful for this transcription as I’ve loved the orchestral overture from the very first time I heard it many years ago and have wished - since then - there was an equally exceptional version for the solo piano.

Now there is.  And to add to that great fortune we also have the transcriber and marvelous pianist performing his great work, which I ask Alexa to play using the “repeat” function.
